Polio is an infectious disease which affects children and young adults. It acquired the shape of a worldwide epidemic till the 1950’s when Jonas Salk from the University of Pittsburgh developed an injectable vaccine for the cure of Polio or poliomyelitis. The vaccine was approved after tests and mass campaigns were launched to vaccinate the children in the U.S. The result was that the number of cases dropped to just 161 by 1961 in the U.S. Other countries followed suit and the numbers dropped considerably in those countries also. The next step was the development of an oral vaccine which replaced the injectable vaccine in popularity. The oral vaccine was developed by several groups but the one developed by Albert Sabin and his group was selected for global use.
