Francium is a heavy chemical element. Its atomic number is 87 and its chemical symbol is Fr. It is highly radioactive alkali metal.

It was discovered in 1939 in France by French physicist, Marguerite Catherine Perey. She discovered it by decontaminating samples of lanthanum which consists of actinium.
